Wow!!

I missed this change with the latest December R4i DSi Adapter Firmware upgrades.

For R4i cards (v1.4) or for R4 cards manufactured since November, they now have the capability to search for and download games backups on the move via Wireless hotspots and have them playable on your DS.

There is a glitch at present that means that you need to do this via either an un-secured network (e.g. Wireless hotspot) or a network using WEP protection. Furthermore we also note that it will not connect to a Network using the N standard, however we expect all this to be fixed in a further firmware upgrade.

We have tried it out ourselves and it works beautifully.

A (free) license identifier on your DS and on Windows PC Downloadable software identifies your download queue and this means that the DS games can be downloaded to your DSI AND your PC.

So, in future if you forget to load your favourite game, then provided you have access to a hotspot you can download it directly to your DSi card wherever you are in the world.

Remember that this will only work with official R4i DSi Adapter cards. R4i.co.uk whom we exclusively recommend here have always supplied us with official cards when we have purchased them (and this is now uniquely verifiable through ‘truth inquiry’ labels that can be checked at http://www.r4i-sdhc.com)

Important: We must repeat that although games can be downloaded freely using the information available at http://www.r4i-sdhc.com and installing cards supplied via the preferred merchant listeds here, it is a violation of copyright to play a game which you have not purchased.

There still seems to be some uncertainty regarding the R4 series of cards. Therefore, we want to try and simplify it all for people and plan to show video and/or pictoria set up instructions to help you het the best from your DS or DSi.

Let’s just take an opportunity to make sure that people know the requirements for Nintendo DS and DSI and the correct R4 DS Adapter for their games console.

Let’s start with the

Nintendo DS/DS Lite – For these, it doesn’t matter which series of R4 card that you have. All current R4-SDHC or R4i-SDHC cards should work without a hitch. Recent issues with the DSi have come about because the DSi has upgradable firmware (via Internet) whereas the DS/DS Lite can only be upgraded at the factory. These upgrades have stopped cards working on a DSi, but Nintendo has no means to do this with other variants.

Nintendo DSi
Your choices depend upon whether you havd a Nintendo DSi upgraded to 1.4 Firmware or not – ignore the subsequent letter e.g. (U)SA, (E)urope , (J)apan

DSi at or below v1.3 Firmware – Any R4i-SDHC version will do an admirable job so long as you do not upgrade your DSi to Firmware1.4 or above. Currently firmware releases for this R4i adapter have stopped at v1.09b meaning that more recent games may not be fully supported – highly recommended that you purchase the current 1.4 flashed R4i Adapter card to have maximum compatability.

DSi at v1.4 Firmware – Your choice is currently limited to the R4i-SDHC pack starred as 1.4 compatible. None of the other R4 series of cards will work if you have upgraded or bought a new DSi with v1.4 Nintendo firmware.

Note: There is no guarantee that 1.4 starred R4i cards will work for a future Nintendo upgrade. You are advised to avoid upgrading your Nintendo DSi firmware without researching and accepting that the R4i functionality may change or even be broken completely.

The next generation of R4i cards is now operable under v1.4 of the Nintendo DSi Firmware.

Now available from R4i.co.uk, the next generation of R4i cards is operable under v1.4 of the Nintendo DSi Firmware.

Quite why people upgraded their Nintendo DSi from an earlier firmware to v1.4 mystifies us here and it rendered earlier R4i Adapter Cards unusable in anything but a DSi up to v1.3.

We are still determining whether earlier cards can be brought to life on a v1.4, but we are doubtful given that the focus has been on developing a new card (with ‘v1.4′ Star emblazoned on the label to show v1.4 DSi compatibility).

At this time, we believe that the best (pragmatic?) solution will be to buy a new entry level R4i Adapter and re-use your micro-SD card … after all, it already contains your personal games, tools and multimedia.

The motto …. don’t upgrade your Nintendo DSi Firmware unless the updates are important enough for you to accept that you may break the functionality of your R4i card.

At a minimum. wait a week or two and research what effect a DSi Firmware upgrade has had for others before you commit.
