R4i Revolution Upgraded for Nintendo DSi – Review
We ordered the R4i Adapter from Memorybits complete with 2Gb micro SD card at a cost of £27.95.
For the avoidance of doubt, this was not a review copy, but was bought and paid for by ourselves; however, we now have an exclusive 20% discount code ‘PR20′ which you can use at Memorybits or their sister Zoombits stores in France, Germany or the US.
The packaging was full retail box packaging (no shrinkwrap) rather than OEM. In common with many suppliers, Memorybits supplied the micro SD card separately to the R4i adapter packaging and this once again was in full retail but blister packaging probably due to the very small size of these flash cards.
The micro SD card was Kingston branded which is a respected brand and was supplied pre-formatted straight out of the package. You must have a micro SD card for the R4i Revolution to be of any use to you.
We ordered the R4i Revolution, but what we actually received was the R4i Revolution Upgraded (still for the DS, DSL & DSi). I have tried to dig arount and identify whst Úpgraded’means in this context, but haven’t found any differences to actually report. The R4i came in a distinctive red box (virtually identical to the original R4 packaging) and contained :
- R4i Adapter in a protective game case
- Thumbdrive USB Micro SD caed reader
- Wrist-strap … could be used with any of games case, thumbdrive adapter or even the DSi itself
I already had an R4 Revolution and a Micro SD card from the original DS that this DSi (and R4i) was replacing, and it was a simple matter of removing the old R4 operating system and downloading the new R4i software (Memorybits pointed me to and hosted the download) onto the original SD card leaving the original content intact.
The firmware installation was an easy matter of downloading a zip file and extracting it. Once I had extracted the zip file to my PC, it was a very simple job to drag and drop two folders and a file to the root folder of the micro SD card.
If you do want to add and play backup versions of your games, then you will need to have a look around for the NDS Roms; we will not help you here as that could be considered a copyright theft.
However, what matters is that when we plugged everything together and had the R4i in our DSi (in total 5 minutes effort), everything worked as well from the R4i as they did from the original cartridge, except that the original cartridges are now in their box safely on a shelf where they will not be lost or damaged.
Very impressed … So far a 10/10 for me with using the R4i as supplied by Memorybits. If you now want to buy, then don’t forget that we now have an exclusive 10% discount code ‘PR10′ which you can use at Memorybits or any of their sister Zoombits stores in France, Germany or the US.

I have got an dsi and am wanting an r4i I have been told it depends on what version of dsi you have got. I was told you need a v1.2 and if you have the v1.4 it wont work with a r4i but when I checked my dsi it is version 1.3e. could you advise me whether the r4i will work.
thanks
Hi There,
No problems .. the card featured here will work.
I have listed guifdance on compatability here in this post
I have loads of games on my laptop,,can i put them onto R4i card and play them in my new nintendo dsi. thanks
Depends by what you mean by “games”.
The DSi will not play PC games, but of you mean that you have NDS Game Roms on your laptop, then Yes, it will play those … though I suppose that there could just be the odd exception.
Of course, you should only play NDS Gammes that you legitimately own and physically owning may not stop use of a downloaded backup being considered legal in some countries.
sorry i should have explained,,,i have a nintendo ds and i have games that i put onto a R4 card and played the games on the nintendo ds,,,can i use a R4i and load the same games onto it and play them on the R4i.thanks
Ahhh….
That makes better sense now. Yes, the games will be transferrable and playable.
Thanks very much for your promt replys,,,1 last Q,,does it matter what software i have on my DSi,,and how can i find out what sofeware i have running..thanks again
On your DSi
1. Click SETTING (with the Tool Icon) on the main menu
2. Check the right hand corner of the top screen which says VER 1.x(+letters)
VER 1.x is the version number. If it shows VER 1.4, it means that your DSi console has been updated with the latest firmware and prior flashcards can’t be used on your DSi consoles. The firmware update on DSi console can’t be reversed.
However the R4i advertised here and sold from our recommended store R4i.co.uk work on that firmware.
We do caution not to accept Nintendo upgrades to 1.5 or beyond until you know whether they break the card or not … and then make up your own mind.
thanks again……………………………………………………………………………………..
When i try to start my v4i on the loading screen it says “please upgrade the hardware for support latest firmware ” my ds is a version 1.3e any ideas how to fix it . would appreciate the help thanks
i have a dsi with version 1.3e,i`ve downloaded different firmware and still can`t get my r4i card to work, can you help?
Sounds like you are trying to load the wrong firmware to your R4i cart. The new firmware will only work on the v1.4 R4i Game Adapters.
Where did you source your card? If you sourced via here, then we only recommend R4i.co.uk. They supply only official cards (not clones) and firmware can be downloaded from R4i.co.uk or at http://www.r4i-sdhc.com.
If you purchased from elsewhere, then your card may not be original and could require completely different firmware.
